At SMKCS our faith is at the center of everything we do! This year our school theme is Walking with Jesus! Inspired by the Eucharistic procession, this is a reminder that we are called to be active disciples. God reveals himself to us through sacred scripture and sacred traditions. It is our goal to immerse our students in both.
Students begin each day by listening to the daily gospel reading and reflecting on its message. In their daily theology class they act out bible stories, memorize verses, and study scripture.
Students express their faith at Mass weekly by serving in liturgical roles, singing in the choir, and serving. Teachers educate students about the parts of the Mass, the physical Church, and encourage participation. The Eucharist is the Source and Summit of our faith! Masses are held for school students, their families, all parishioners and guests on Fridays at 9:00 AM in the church throughout the school year, as well as on Holy Days. We welcome you to attend these Friday masses, and invite a guest!
At St. Mary of the Knobs, students will make the Rite of Reconciliation in grade 2 and receive their First Communion in grade 2. Preparation for reception of these sacraments is the responsibility of the parents working with the second grade teacher. Students in grades 3-8 participate in Penance Services during Advent and Lent. The Coordinator of Catechism and Discipleship assists the teachers in the necessary sacramental preparation. The Coordinator will also conduct sessions for parents of students as they prepare to receive the Sacraments of Reconciliation and the Eucharist.
Classes visit our adoration chapel regularly and have opportunities to participate in a living rosary, a Eucharistic procession, and May Crowning.
Service projects are incorporated into the life of the school and tie the school to the community. Students participate in multiple service opportunities throughout the year including a “Day of Service.” in which our oldest students go out into the community and spend the day serving others in need. Retreats are offered as part of the faith life of students for some grade levels.
Students showing a strong Christian spirit are recognized each quarter with a special Christian Spirit Award. Students who are caught “walking with Jesus” are recognized over the school announcements and on the school bulletin board.
