In addition to the incorporation of arts into the core curriculum in the regular classroom, other experiences are offered weekly through special area classes. Kindergarten through sixth-grade students participate in music class learning how to create, perform, listen, respond, and connect to music in a classroom environment that allows everyone to enjoy music, regardless of skill or interest level. Younger students play music games that encourage teamwork, learn to recognize patterns in music and use appropriate music vocabulary. In upper elementary, students learn how to read music on the grand staff by playing recorders and keyboards. In middle school, the focus is shifted to music appreciation where students are introduced to composers from all periods. A theater class is offered for learning improv and storytelling. Middle school students have the opportunity to lead liturgical music at each weekly Mass by joining the after school choir club. Healthy vocal techniques and performance skills are developed in preparation for school wide programs which include a Christmas program (grades K-2), a Veteran’s Day program (grades 3-5), and a fall musical (grades 6-8) where students utilize their gifts through set design, tech/audio, directing, and performing. Students in grades K-5 and 7-8 take art class exploring two and three dimensional techniques in a variety of mediums. Learning from core content areas is connected through drawings, landscapes, abstract art, self portraits, sculptures, paper mache, and many other creative endeavors.
